Christmas wreath guides

What size Christmas wreath do I need for my front door?

The right size is the one that suits your door, not the biggest or the smallest. Here is how to measure the door, panel or glazing, what proportions tend to look balanced, and how our two wreath sizes suit single doors, double doors, glass panels and porches.

Quick answer

For most single front doors, a 34cm Regular wreath gives a neat, understated look, and a 65cm Large wreath makes a bold statement on a wide door or generous panel. Measure the door, panel or glazing, leave a visible margin around the wreath, and remember that a bow and decorations may add to the overall size.

How do you measure a front door for a wreath?

Start with the space the wreath will actually hang in, not the whole door. Most people hang a wreath at about eye level, so what matters is the width of the door leaf at that height and what sits around it: a panel, a run of glazing, a letterbox or a knocker.

Measure in centimetres, because wreath sizes are given as a diameter, which is the distance straight across the ring. Our two sizes are 34cm and 65cm. A quick sketch with the measurements written on it is worth more than trying to remember them in the shop or at the checkout.

Measure the width of the door leaf

Measure across the door itself, from edge to edge, not including the frame. This is your outer limit.

Measure the panel or clear space

If your door has a raised panel, a glazed section or a decorative moulding, measure the width of the area where the wreath will sit. A wreath that sits neatly inside a panel often looks more deliberate than one that crosses its edges.

Note anything in the way

Measure down from the top of the door to the knocker, the peephole and the letterbox, and note where each one sits. The wreath should clear them, or you may choose to hang it just below.

Decide where the top of the wreath will be

Mark the spot with a pencil or a small piece of masking tape. Standing back a few steps and looking at the mark tells you more than any measurement.

Allow for the bow and decorations

The diameter is measured across the ring. A bow, ribbon tails or decorations that stick out can add to the overall width and length, and the hanger adds a little more at the top. Check the product page for the fine detail, and leave a little spare room.

What are standard front door sizes in the UK?

There is no single size that fits every home. A UK door supplier notes that the most common front door widths are 762mm and 838mm, roughly 76cm and 84cm across, with 838mm more usual in newer buildings. Older houses, new builds, cottages and flats can all differ, so measure your own door rather than assuming.

As a simple piece of arithmetic, on a door that is about 84cm wide, a 34cm wreath covers a little over a third of the width and a 65cm wreath covers about three quarters of it. That is only a rough guide, because it is the panel or glazing around the wreath that usually decides how it looks.

What size wreath looks right on a door?

There is no rule that every door must follow, but a few design rules of thumb help. Treat them as guidance, then trust your eye.

  • Leave a margin. A wreath tends to look best when there is visible door or panel around it, rather than touching the edges. A few centimetres of space on each side lets the shape breathe.
  • Go big on large doors. A small wreath on a wide, tall door can look lost. If in doubt on a wide door, going larger usually looks better than going smaller.
  • Match the scale to the space. A modest wreath suits a narrow door, a small panel or a window. A large wreath suits a generous panel and a door with a lot of presence.
  • Hang it centred, or deliberately off centre. Centred on the panel or the door is the safe choice. Hanging slightly off to one side can look good if there is a feature on the other.
  • Think about viewing distance. If your door is seen from a long path, a bigger wreath reads better from the gate.

Which wreath size suits which kind of door?

Here is how the same two sizes tend to work on common UK door layouts. Use it alongside your own measurements.

Your door or spaceRegular, 34cm (from £45)Large, 65cm (from £65)
Standard single doorA neat, understated look, good where a panel or glazing limits the space.A bold statement if the panel or door is wide enough to carry it.
Wide or tall doorCan look small unless the wreath is hung in a defined panel.Usually the better fit, with room around it.
Door with a glazed panelEasier to place so that it does not cover too much of the glass.Better on a solid lower section or a wide door with plenty of solid area.
Double doorsOne on each leaf gives a matching pair. One on a single leaf for impact, or a pair if each leaf is wide.
Porch, garden gate or windowUsually the right choice for tighter spaces.Best on a large porch door or a generous open space.

Our Natural and Traditional wreaths. Each style comes in a Regular 34cm and a Large 65cm size.

What about double doors, glass panels and porches?

Double doors. You have two choices. One wreath on a single leaf, usually the leaf you use most, gives a strong focal point. A matching pair, one on each leaf, gives symmetry. Check that the wreaths are not caught when you open the doors, and measure each leaf separately.

Doors with glass panels. A wreath that covers all the glass can darken the hall and hide the view out. Hang it on a solid section where you can, or choose a size that leaves part of the glass clear. Glass also reflects, so the back of the wreath may be visible from inside. For how to hold a wreath on glass or a glazed door, see our guide to hanging a wreath without damaging your door.

Porches, gates and windows. A smaller wreath suits a gate or a window frame, where the space is tight and the wreath will be seen close up. A glazed porch door follows the same rules as any glazed door. Hanging a fresh wreath in a cool, sheltered porch also helps it last, which is covered in our guide to how long a fresh wreath lasts.

Which size should you choose from Finnegan Christmas Wreaths?

Every one of our handmade fresh wreaths comes in two sizes: Regular at 34cm, from £45, and Large at 65cm, from £65. Each is made to order on our family farm in Clogher, County Tyrone, using Noble Fir grown there, and delivery is free across the UK. Because they are handmade from natural materials, each wreath varies slightly.

As a starting point, choose Regular for a compact door, a panel, a porch, a gate or a window. Choose Large for a wide or tall door, a generous panel or when you want the wreath to be the centrepiece of the entrance. If you are between the two, measure the panel or space again and look at how much margin you would like around it.

Which design suits your home is a separate question from size, and we cover it in our guide to choosing a Christmas wreath for your front door. For a closer look at the three styles, the Contemporary, Natural and Traditional wreaths are compared in traditional vs natural vs contemporary wreaths.

Wreath size questions

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most about choosing the size of a Christmas wreath.

What is the most popular size for a front door wreath?

There is no single answer, because doors differ. A compact wreath suits a narrow door or a panel, and a larger one suits a wide door. We offer a 34cm Regular and a 65cm Large, so you can match the size to your own measurements.

Is a 34cm wreath too small for a front door?

Not if it suits the space. A 34cm wreath looks neat inside a panel, on a porch door, a gate or a window. On a very wide or tall door it can look small, and the Large 65cm may balance the door better.

Should a wreath cover the whole door panel?

Usually not. A visible margin around the wreath tends to look better than a wreath that fills or crosses the panel edges. Measure the panel and choose a size that leaves a few centimetres of space around it.

Does the bow change the size of the wreath?

It can. The size we give is the diameter across the ring, and a bow, ribbon tails or decorations may add to the overall width and length. Leave a little spare room, and check the product page for details before you order.

What size wreath suits double doors?

Either hang one wreath on the leaf you use most for a focal point, or one on each leaf for a matching pair. Measure each leaf, and check that the wreaths do not catch when you open and close the doors.

Can I put a wreath on a glazed front door?

Yes, but think about the glass. A smaller wreath, or one hung on a solid section, keeps more light and view. Choose a hanging method that suits the door surface, and test it before you commit.
