A real wreath is a fresh, perishable product, so where it comes from and how it reaches you matter. Here is where people buy fresh Christmas wreaths in the UK, what to check before ordering online, and how our own wreaths measure up. This is our guide, so we say plainly where we are the subject.

Our Traditional wreath, handmade fresh on the farm
You can buy fresh Christmas wreaths from florists, garden centres, farm shops, tree farms, online makers and supermarkets. Online, check when it is made, who grew the foliage, the foliage type, real or artificial decorations, delivery, damage policy and returns. Fresh wreaths are perishable, so change-of-mind returns often do not apply.
This is our guide, written by a family that makes and sells wreaths, so we have an interest in the answer. We have tried to keep the advice useful whoever you buy from. Most fresh wreaths in the UK come from one of a handful of places, and each has its own strengths.
| Where | Often good for | Worth asking |
|---|---|---|
| Florists | Made to order, custom colours and sizes, often collected in person. | Can they post it, and how is it packed? |
| Garden centres | Seeing the wreath before you buy, with no delivery to worry about. | When was it made, and has it been in a warm shop? |
| Farm shops and Christmas tree farms | Foliage grown close to where the wreath is made, usually seasonal. | Is it fresh stock, and do they deliver? |
| Online makers | Wider choice, delivery to your door, gifting to other addresses. | Freshness, packaging, damage and returns terms (see below). |
| Supermarkets and high street shops | Convenience and price. | Is it real foliage, and how long has it been on display? |
If you live near a local florist, farm shop or tree farm, buying in person lets you see and smell the wreath. If you do not, or you are sending one to someone else, ordering online is the practical route. That is where a little checking pays off.
You cannot touch a wreath through a screen, so the listing needs to tell you what you would learn in a shop. These are the questions worth answering before you pay.
The key question is how long it sits between being made and arriving on your door. A seller who makes to order, or in small batches close to dispatch, has less time for the foliage to dry. If the listing does not say, ask.
Some makers grow their own greenery. Others buy it in. Neither is wrong, but a seller that is open about where the foliage comes from is usually one that has thought about quality.
Check whether the base is a single fir or a mix. More on this in the next section.
Look for photos of the actual product rather than only styled shots, and a size given in centimetres across. A 34cm wreath and a 65cm wreath look very different on a door. Our guide to choosing the right wreath size helps if you are unsure.
Natural wreaths often combine real and artificial pieces. The listing should say which is which.
Check the price, the area covered, how the wreath is packed and if you will see a delivery window before you pay.
A clear damage policy, with a time limit and a contact address, is a good sign. Look for what evidence the seller wants, usually the order number and photos.
Look for a recognised card payment provider, and the padlock in your browser address bar.
It depends on what you want. A wreath made from a single fir, such as Noble Fir, gives a uniform, structured look and a fresh scent, and firs have a reputation for holding their needles well. Mixed foliage can look softer and more wild, and may include cypress, holly, ivy or eucalyptus. It can be lovely, but different evergreens dry at different rates, so a mixed wreath can look uneven as the weeks go on.
Neither is a mistake. What matters is that the seller tells you what the wreath is made from, so you know what to expect. For how long a fresh wreath lasts and how to look after it, see our guide to how long a fresh wreath lasts.
It matters mostly for honesty and for expectations. Dried orange slices, cones, cinnamon and hazel are natural and will age along with the foliage. Berries are often artificial. Neither is a problem if the listing is clear.
Small decorations are also worth a thought if you have small children or pets, as they can be a choking hazard. If you are weighing up a wholly fresh wreath against a long-lasting artificial one, our guide to real vs artificial wreaths covers that choice.
Fresh wreaths are bulky and delicate, so how they travel matters. Good packaging stops the wreath moving in the box, and a sensible seller offers a tracked service and a clear way to report damage. We cover the practical side in our guide to wreath delivery, and when to order is covered in our guide to the best time to buy.
On returns, many people assume the usual 14-day cooling-off period applies to everything bought online. It does not. The Consumer Contracts Regulations list exceptions, including goods that are liable to deteriorate or expire rapidly, and goods made to your specifications. Which? lists perishable items among the exemptions too. A fresh, made to order wreath is likely to fall into those categories, but check the seller’s own terms.
That does not mean you have no protection. If a wreath arrives damaged or is not as described, you can still ask the seller to put it right. Do so quickly, and keep the box and photos.
Practical tipPhotograph the wreath and the box as soon as you open it if anything looks wrong, and contact the seller within the time stated in their policy.

Buying questions
Short answers to common questions about buying a real wreath online.
Yes, if the seller is clear about what you are getting. Look for real product photos, a size in centimetres, stated delivery terms, a damage policy and a recognised card payment provider.
Often not. The usual 14-day right to cancel has exceptions, including goods liable to deteriorate rapidly and goods made to your specifications. Check the seller's terms before you order. Faulty or misdescribed goods are different.
Ask when it is made relative to dispatch. A seller who makes to order, or in small batches close to posting, has less time for the foliage to dry. On arrival, fresh needles feel supple and smell of fir.
No. Handmade wreaths made from natural materials vary slightly in shape, foliage and decoration placement, so yours may differ a little from the product photo. A good seller says so in the listing.
Usually, yes. Most online shops let you enter a different delivery address at checkout. Check the delivery window shown, and make sure someone can bring it in and unbox it promptly.
Photograph the wreath and the packaging, then contact the seller straight away with your order number and the photos. Check their policy for the time limit, because it can be short. Ours is 48 hours.
